COZMEL IM Support for MS

Brian Whelan will be competing in an Ironman race November 28th in Cozumel, Mexico to raise $25,000 for Multiple Sclerosis research.  Brian was diagnosed with MS in 2004 so raising money for research is a high priority for him.

“I was diagnosed with MS in 2004. I have numbness in my left hand and foot and sporadic weakness in my left leg. I can still run, bike, and swim, at this point, and am grateful for that (I have close friends with MS who have it much tougher).  For many years, I’ve watched the Ironman World Championships from Kona, Hawaii and, every year, another story touches me and brings tears to my eyes and I wonder what it would be like to cross an Ironman finish line with my own story to tell.  I believe that attitude is everything and the way we face the challenges that come our way demonstrates more about our character than any words ever could.

My doctors and therapists have said that they’ve seen too many MS patients go downhill because they stop living when they’re diagnosed. If I can, by participating in this race, inspire someone else with MS or any challenge, really, to dream big and reengage in the game of life again, I will have fulfilled a big part of the reason why I want to do this.  But I can’t do it alone.  You can make an impact through your donations.  Please check out my site and join me in contributing toward a cure for MS.  You can provide additional motivation for me to finish this race by donating based on how far I get.

BAINBRIDGE MINI-TRI

There is a tri training group at Island Fitness over on Bainbridge, with most folks working towards the Tri Turtle.  As preparation for race day, they’re doing a little mini-tri here on the island at the end of August (Sun Aug 29th) — and wanted to invited any of the West Sound tri group to participate, if they are interested.
It’s going to be a relatively small, no-frills affair (capped at 150, no fancy schwag), with roughly a $25 price tag to cover expenses.
Race course (not particularly hilly) is:
All in all, it’s about a 14.3-mile proposition:
*0.5-mile swim in Blakely Harbor (wetsuit required!)
*11.5-mile bike from Blakely Harbor along Pleasant Beach, Point White and Crystal Springs (out and back)
*2.3-mile run from Blakely Harbor along Country Club Rd (out to Toe Jam Hill and back)

WILD CAT LAKE INFO

1) Wildcat Lake is CLOSED on Wednesdays and Thursdays. There has been some miscommunication between the Parks Department and the Groundskeeper the past three weeks that has resulted in the gate NOT being locked on Wed. and Thurs. But from now on, both the park and the auxiliary parking lot WILL be locked. Any cars in the parking lot, will be locked in. The park being open at all is dependent upon us cooperating with the two days of closure per week. The gas station owner has been encouraged to tow cars who park in his lot and walk into the park. Finally, a sheriff’s deputy has been put on “speed dial” to handle any “non-compliant” citizens. The Parks Department wants to make sure that the access policy was clear since it has NOT been implemented the past three weeks but is about to go into full effect this upcoming week.

2) There are several groups swimming at Wildcat Lake.  If you are one of these groups please add it to the calendar so others can join in!

3) Lisa J. Ballou will be conducting a “Yoga for Athletes” workshop at the Silverdale Expansions Yoga studio. It will take place on Saturday, July 17th from 1:30-3:30p.m. The cost is $25 per person. In this workshop we will systematically strengthen and stretch the muscle groups and joints that are most commonly challenged and jeopardized during triathlons and athletic activity. Learn how to use yoga to augment your athletic training and to recover from it more quickly and effectively. You can register via the www.expansionsyoga.com website or contact Lisa J. Ballou @ millball02@aol.com for info. This workshop will be limited to 12 participants.

Website Repair and Maintenance

Over the next couple of days the website will be going through some maintenance and cleanup. Sorry for the spam in the forums. The open nature of the forum has been locked up to members only.

-Edit-  I restored functionality to the site.  Again, I apologize for the spam in the forums.  The unfortunate thing about the internet is if you leave any BBS “open” for general public, you tend to gather the seedy and greedy of the world to post on it vice actually having legitimate postings.  There are still many items to update and tweak.  This is your site so if you have suggestions that would make it better please post it in the (now clean) forums.  Thanks.

GREG’S KONA IRONMAN EXPERIENCE

MY IRONMAN JOURNEY
Acknowledgements: I would first like to recognize my wife and family… the stressors created by this journey is taxing on all. I would also like to thank Kainoa of Pauole Sports, the schedules and workouts more than prepared me to complete the journey. And some special mentoring from lots of people, most importantly my training mentors – Robin(my bride) & Jim Felty, also: Carl Crimbring, Scott Reichard, Beth Brewster, Mike Church, Jon Bergen and a whole slew of people at both the West Sound Triathlon Club and Pauole Sports Team.  Sage advice from all!

Things I didn’t think could be done:
- 130 miles on a bike trainer – (thanks to the computrainer and netflix)
- Back to back long bikes on the Kitsap peninsula – Oh the places you’ll go…
- The two (sometimes 3) laps across Wildcat Lake (sure beats the pool though)
- Survive the swim without swallowing 1/2 the ocean
- Make it thru the heat in Hawaii

WHERE DID IT BEGIN?
My wife and I run-walking to do our first 5K, Carl Crimbring and I being edged on by Scott Reichard Miles underwater Rowing (swim), spin biking (aero bike), treadmilling (running)

THE START OF THE JOURNEY…
So there we were, Robin and I sitting in the family room watching the Clearwater 70.3 Championships. Just as we were about to turn off the TV at the end of the program the Lottery roll-down list started… (as Emirel would say) BAMM, my name is there, I looked at Robin, she looked at me, Holy Cow, my name is there (kind of wish it was Robins, she is much more deserving), we start jumping around the room. Robin calmly gets off the couch and immediately books the King Kamehameha Hotel for us – We are going to KONA!

AND SO IT BEGINS:
I originally had decided to not do an IRONMAN distance race, just focus on short triathlons. To the trash can with all those thoughts and plans – I’m going to KONA. So I shifted most of my race plans around to support racing long, and poof, I’m off.

SLOGGING THROUGH THE MONTHS:
Not really, prep for Vineman 1/2 IRONMAN Tri (gotta finish that one to validate my spot for Kona), prep for Lake Stevens 1/2 IRONMAN – ya this training thing is going to be tough… Several weeks before Vineman my right knee felt like it was going to blow up, several days of icing and heat (I don’t think icing did a damn thing, as soon as started a hot tub regiment, wahla) – and poof I’m good to go again, whew, that was a close call. Vineman – wow I was having a great race, had my nutrition right, was hydrating well, got on the run, felt weak but okay. Passed Robin at mile 6 on the run, and then poof, my ears started popping, I started seeing black spots – yep better slow down. Actually I slowed to a walk, almost all the way back. Survival kicked in, since I needed to finish to validate my spot for Kona, I wasn’t taking any chances. When I did get to the finish my legs were twitching and cramping something fierce. I have never sat there and watch muscles go into convulsions. quite cool, at least after the fact. he hee Lots of little races, lots of PRs including winning 1st overall at SATSOP SPRINT TRI. So by the end of August the daily slog of training is starting to wear on me…

THE TAPER:
Ahhhh… yes it was nice to just know that I was on the down slide of my workouts, despite realizing that I still had a 17 mile run, and an 80 mile ride, I was excited.

PACKING:
Geez, what to bring, what and how should I tweak my bike

TRAVELING:
Yep, 2 bike boxes, 2 kids, and a whole lot of stuff. Thankfully the kids are now fairly independent, minus the small plethora of electronics that must escort them, they are self sufficient.

KONA:
Okay I’ve visited before and have been here before, BUT NOT LIKE THIS – this is it… We arrived Tuesday, and everything started to become a blur.

THE RACE:
There I was – treading water 5 minutes to 7:00, it had finally really sank in, WOW – I’m here! BOOM The gun went off, I had decided to be on the outside – by the floating car, nice steady stroke. I was in fairly clear water, just me and a couple hundred friends, however; I think I was a little too far outside – I wasn’t feeling the swim surge that normally pulls you at the start, but hey clear (& warm) water! DAMN – how far do these stupid buoys go? – this was the first year they didn’t have a boat at the end and with the swell it was hard to even see the next buoy. Did I mention that I didn’t think the bouys were ever going to stop… Ahhh, the turn buoys – still not in a good rhythm but I am comfortable (slow at the turn 47 minutes). Need to pick it up, rats – fighting a little current.
T1 – wash the salt off my face, hey – a volunteer unzipped and slid my skinsuit down – nice. Wave at Kainoa, didn’t see Robin, into the tent. Let the volunteer put sunscreen on (didn’t want to get it all over my hands – bad plan I figured out later since he missed some spots, even though I was telling him where.) next time I’ll just wipe my hands with the towel when I’m done. Couldn’t find my helmet – the moved it to the bike. Quick potty break and I’m off -easy to find my bike, I had put a duct tape X at my row, how convenient.
BIKE: Crossed the mount line and stepped onto my shoes, slipped into them before pedaling up Palani, RATS didn’t see Robin again. I’m going – steady cadence, effort is good. Getting the nutrition down (something every 20 minutes) and rolling. Grades/hills are easy, heart rate is low, but the temp is rising! Not much wind, a little in your face out to the end of the Queen K. highway. 5 minutes up the road and a nice lady hollers “gotta like it – hardly any wind today” Okay I knew that was a jinx, 10 minutes later WHAM wind in my face and climbing into Hawi – not bad though averaged 19.75 so far, easy effort. McDonalds ain’t got nothin on me – I’m loving it. Yet again a fun breaker – snap goes my chain – this is where it turns out i am a very lucky guy? I go back get my chain, the link next to my master is popped, and I can fix it! 9 minutes later and a little bit of grease on my fingers and I am off. Climb and I do mean climb a nice easy effort into Hawi and I am at the turnaround. Yee-haw, fly out of Hawi, wind at my back, then some serious white knuckles CROSSWINDS like I have never dealt with before – EVER (except the one time I crossed the agate pass bridge). I’m not so aero on the drops, but these crosswinds are brutal. So now I am just wishing they would go away – HALLELUJAH – nope wrong word – DAMN – got my wish, not they are mostly in my face and screaming (or at least I was). So I am excited about 15 mph going down the hills into this wind. Yah these weren’t here coming out, so, unfortunately the legendary winds that I had been warned about on the Queen K were here. Effort level is up, heat, ya that is way up, the ice bottles and cold gatorade was puke warm within 10 minutes, bananas are goooooo. So I sucked it up and kept moving, by the time I got to the airport the wind had subsided and pace was back up to 20 mph.
T2 – Ohh, I have to move my feet. Steady jog thru, find the port-a-pottie, more sunscreen, gatorade, socks, shoes, hat and I’m off. Okay maybe it wasn’t that easy to leave the tent and go back into the sun…
RUN: Yah, I don’t feel THAT bad. Pace feels slow, but I am moving. Hey there is Robin, quick kiss and off to the first aid station on Alii… water for the front, water for the back, drink one, gatorade, a gel, and a full hat full of ice (can you say brain freeze). 2nd aid station, getting liquid down – not happening – RATS – okay walking the aid stations I can force down the liquids – okay its working, I am moving. AND why won’t my pace increase? Did I mention it is hot? 1/2 way done, this is tough, oh ya I forgot this is an IRONMAN. I’ve made to the energy lab (I think it is because it sucks the energy out of you). Mile 19 the motivation marque – “Go zombie Frog” Kellie left me the perfect inspiration to get me back. Mile 23, moving good, hey there is Chris – see you at the finish! Ah, Alii Drive – it is everything it is touted to be, it is truly electric! And there is Robin and Kellie!

POST RACE:
my finishers medal (Kellie got to give it to me), my finishers shirt, my finishers hat, ice cream, electrolytes, a free massage, more electrolytes.

NUTRITION:
I struggled through July, August, and September (actually all of my training since my first IRONMAN) with nutrition. Get it wrong and you are doomed, just as I think I am getting it right my stomach revolts. geez, can’t seem to get it. So I had my plan, worked it, perfected it and sure enough get on the bike in Kona and have to dump all of hte perpetuem and revise my entire plan. Figures, remarkably, my adjustment to gatorade was a big change… However, I didn’t do too bad, finished upright without visiting the medical tent! PACING: Couer de lane IM(2007) I swallowed half the lake because of high winds and chop. Arizona IM(2008) was exceptionally hot and did I mention windy as hell. Lake Stevens(2008) I had to go to the bathroom so bad it brought me to a halt – over-hydrating. Vineman(2009) was the typical heat survival-fest; Lake Stevens(2009) I was all stressed, I just coasted through the bike to be able to post a strong run. So all that work to get it right… and I went a little too easy at Kona (or did I?)

“Suck it up” SHIRTS

West Sound Triathlon Shirts with “suck it up & keep moving” are in! When you are out shopping at Poulsbo Running Store or Silverdale Cyclery you can pick one up for $20.

KONA, MONTHLY MEETING, & THE CALENDAR

Thank You everybody!  I really appreciate all the sage advice and encouragement everybody provided me.  I finished the Kona IRONMAN World Championships in just under 14 hours.

The West Sound Triathlon Club Monthly meeting is next week (Oct 20th @ 6:00pm) at the Tracyton Scout Hall, directions are on the calendar!  We will be planning out next year, so bring your ideas and your desires, it is our club, which unfortunately means WE have to decide what we want to do.  The Club is paying for the pizza!  I do plan on talking a little about my Ironman experience after we plan out next year.
You don’t need to be a member to attend – did I mention – free pizza?
A NOTE FROM THE PREZ:
Hard to believe we have been in existence for almost a year already.  I want to take a second to say “thank you” to the many volunteers who have made this club a success already.  We have enjoyed some terrific training and racing, fabulous presentations by gifted speakers, tremendous sponsorship support and oh yeah a bunch of fun.  As the 2009 triathlon season winds down I want to congratulate all those who have participated in our club events, races and supported other races.  It has been a blast.
It is also time for me to challenge you, ask you, beg you to attend our TOW…Triathlon Outing Workshop on Tuesday, 20 October at 6pm.  It is at this meeting we will put together our plan for 2010.  Together we can continue to keep moving our club forward to reach goals.  The directions to Scout hall are on the website and I look forward to seeing you there.

TUESDAY (September 15 at 6:00p.m.) is the next club meeting.  Beth Brewster has a presentation from her experience at ULTRAMAN CANADA, the new shirts and hats are in, and we will be discussing the end of season party.
